Estes gráficos são utilizados em estudos científicos para ilustrar, explorar e explicar os dados encontrados. Todavia, pouco se tem estudado sobre a função da visualização de dados em periódicos científicos na perspectiva do design da informação. Este estudo traz um uma breve história dos gráficos, um levantamento de gráficos em nove edições do periódico científico internacional Arthroscopy com base na classificação proposta por Kirk em 2012. Os resultados mostraram a maior incidência de gráficos com propósitos de comunicação de comparação de categorias e mudanças ao longo do tempo. Porém, a classificação de Kirk não contemplou alguns gráficos da amostra. Conclui-se que esta classificação, apesar de pertinente, não foi suficiente para categorizar os gráficos estatísticos da amostra.
